Subject Area:
Math/4th grade/Blaire Fleeman
5/8/13
Lesson Description:We skyped with Mrs. Knedler, a former employee that worked closely in the 5th grade classrooms daily.
Sucesses: The 4th graders are a little intimidated by the 5th grade teachers. They realize they need to go prepared to 5th grade by knowing their multiplication facts fluenty.
Things you would change: Nothing:)
Materials Needed: Students were prepared by writing questions they wanted to ask.

The Tortoise and The Hare
Subject Area:
PPCD, Shannan Schmidt, May 18,2012
Lesson Description: We skyped with Ms. Allen , a first grade teacher, at Eagle Mountain Elementary in Siginaw. I went to elementary- high school with Ms. Allen.
Successes: The students enjoyed seeing the other classroom and the students were very friendly and liked talking to them live on skype. My students liked being able to see themselves on the screen as well. It was fun for both classes.
Things you would change: I think I would ask for the other class to stand closer to the computer. It was hard for my students to hear some of hers reading. Perhaps a shorter story read to my class as well.
Materials Needed: Skype account and Computer Ms. Allen and I discussed ahead of time and tested out the skyping program. The type of classroom I had and with my special needs students we decided her 1st graders would read a short readers theater to my students. They read The tortoise and the hare. They had two prepared if my students were able to handle the time frame of the first one. My class made a poster that said Hello Ms. Allen's class and on the back it read GOOD JOB for when they finished their read. We sang them some songs.

Austin, TX vs. Midlothian, TX

Lesson Description: We skyped with Ms. Laura Bryant, a 2nd grade teacher, from Austin, TX. Mrs. Dawson and I did the skype lesson together. Mrs. Dawson located the teacher on facebook.
Sucesses: The students enjoyed asking questions of other students from another area. They all enjoyed seeing themselves on the screen. I was very impressed with the behavior of the classroom that we skyped with.
Things you would change: I thought reminding the class of rules and expectations would be enough. I didn't think about discussing what they should or shouldn't do when they saw themselves on the screen.
Materials Needed: ladybug, laptop, Mrs. Simmons, facts about Texas, questions about Austin, Information/facts about Midlothian that the students from Austin might ask about. Our students were able to use their prior knowledge from our community unit and field trip to discuss us being Cement Capital of the World, the MISD Mult-Purpose Stadium was very important to our students, attractions around our area, and the school mascot.

Any Extra Information You Want to Share: We learned interesting facts about Austin. The questions we received from students and parents were awesome. We would love to do this, again, with a school in another state or another country. We will definitely discuss expectations and rules more in depth. That was my biggest disappointment with the lesson. I think we all enjoyed hearing about the many different cultures and Christmas traditions that are celebrated in Ms. Bryant's classroom.
Christmas in Texas

Lesson Description:Skyping with a 2nd grade class in Round Rock, TX. I found the teacher through Social Networking and we worked together to come up with a lesson plan that would enhance both classes' learning. We talked about Christmas traditions in different cultures and local Christmas activities that took place in our towns.
Sucesses:The Longbranch classes were able to see that the Holiday Season is celebrated differently in Asian and Indian cultures, which were represented by Mrs.Bryant's class in Round Rock. Mrs. Bryant's class enjoyed learning about the concrete capital of the world and found it humorous that we have no shopping mall in Midlothian. The students from Longbranch were able to use their prior knowledge to recall information they learned about Midlothian during our community unit earlier in the school year.
Things you would change: I would spend more time discussing with my class how to act appropriately while skyping. They seemed overly excited, which may have been because it was the first time for many of them to Skype.
Materials Needed:Ladybug, laptop, Skype Account
Technology TEKS:1c,2ab,4b,5a,6a

Any Extra Information You Want to Share:The students look forward to skyping again in the Spring.
